There are a variety of orthopedic instruments which have their specific functions during orthopedic procedures. These instruments are highly efficient while working with bones and the surrounding tissues. Orthopedic surgery focuses on arms and legs since these are the two most common places where people get injured, and curing these parts of body prevents serious disabilities. Orthopedic surgeons do not only make use of orthopedic instruments, but they also use some general instruments, such as scalpels and retractors in order to achieve their target accurately during different procedures.

Surgical knives, cutters and scalpels are sharp instruments, which are used in orthopedics to cut body’s soft tissue so that better access can be gained to the bone that needs to be fixed.

Bone drills, whether they were manually or battery operated, are also common instruments used in orthopedic surgery. They allow holes to be drilled in the tissue of the bone so that screws and plates can be applied. These instruments are available in different sizes and according to the procedure. Apart from bone drills, orthopedic surgeons also make use of bone chisels for removing certain bone tissue. A bone chisel is more appropriate to remove slivers of bone when a surgeon does not need a large hole to be done.

Chisels are also used to shape bones as to surgeon’s preference. Such procedure is done on bones which have some kind of deformity. Chisels come in various shapes and sizes and come with non-slip handles which allow proper control while the procedure is underway.    Another common instruments used in orthopedic surgery is bone mallets. The inside of this mallet is made using brass, and they come in the shape of a hammer. They are used in a variety of operations to tap over chisels, osteotomes or gauges.

A bone curette is another kind of instrument which is widely used by orthopedic surgeons. It is a tool which is in the shape of an orb and has a long handle attached. Bone curettes are used to remove any soft tissue or small bone fragments. They also can be used to remove infected soft and bone tissue.
